About The Event
For the 2nd time this year, we are partnering with Project EATS to re-live our UWC Service days and get our hands dirty for a good cause!
Founded in 2009 by artist Linda Goode Bryant, Project EATS is a living installation transforming vacant lots and rooftops into neighborhood-based farms supporting farm stands, pantries, prepared food, and community programs to catalyze creativity and cultivate greater food sovereignty across New York City. We will volunteer at their Urban Farm at Ward's Island, set on the grounds of HELP USA's homeless shelter. Â Ward's Island is a very pleasant 20 min walk along the Harlem River and across Ward's Island Bridge from 2 Manhattan subway Stations (Q - 96th and 2nd Av and 6 on 103rd and Lex Av). Â Bring your family, bring your friends! Anybody and everybody 13 or older is welcome.Â
We'll end our shift with a delicious bagel lunch from Wonder Bagels (trust us, they live up to their name). Registration fee covers lunch, snacks and drinks
As the picture from our May service day shows, volunteering is rain or shine, unless there is lightning, so please dress appropriately for the weather. We advise wearing a hat, cool clothing, long pants, sunscreen. Closed-toe shoes are required and bringing a water bottle is recommended (though we will have plenty of water available) Â Â
Volunteer tasks may include:
- Weeding, cultivating, seeding, transplanting, soil preparation, and tending to crops;Â
- Grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing and weed whacking;
- General site maintenance tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and trash pick up.
